This subject covers traditional 2D, stop motion and digital 3D animation techniques. Students complete exercises in all disciplines. While the emphasis in lectures and tutorials may be weighted toward one discipline more than the others (e.g. digital 3D), students may choose to complete major assignments in any medium.
Students design and build a range of simple models using a variety of techniques. In practical sessions a number of designs are interpreted across the various mediums. The models used are simple shapes and objects i.e. not fully articulated bipedal characters. Each design is completed to allow for a certain amount of ‘character’ animation i.e. squash and stretch and other forms of deformation; twisting and bending.
Completed model sheets, armatures and/or 3D character rigs are provided to students to produce a range of walk and run cycles with an emphasis on staying ‘on model’ or maintaining a particular sense of character identity through motion.
